About Us

Greetings!
After a very eclectic and successful inaugural season which hooked eager concert goers to its trademark blend of passionate artistry and welcoming conviviality, Viola by Choice is finally back, for a new season: bringing US back into Music. Viola By Choice and its artistic director, French violist Aurélien Pétillot, are thrilled to invite you to the season-opener concert celebrating the music of the legendary italian virtuoso: Paganini

VIOLA BY CHOICE is an ensemble of the foremost local and visiting musicians, in variable instrumental combinations, which seeks to showcase the viola through engaging, eclectic and accessible chamber music performances.  It wishes to foster dialogue between artists and the community, while challenging stereotypes associated with Classical Music and the viola.

With the concert Paganini: The beauty behind the bad boy, Viola by choice will offer the rare opportunity to hear two exhilarating and seldom-performed works: Paganini's Trio Concertante for Viola, Cello and Guitar, and his Quartet no. 15 for Viola, Violin, Cello and Guitar, with Aurélien Pétillot on the viola, Helen Bravenec, on the violin, Julia Cory on the cello, and Isaac Bustos on the guitar.

$15 general admission, $12 Seniors, $8 students, $5 children

It is the mission of VIOLA BY CHOICE to:
  • Showcase the viola as a central and unique instrument in the History of Western Music;

  • Promote creative, energetic and joyful music making in a chamber music context;

  • Debunk and transcend the stereotypes connected to classical music and to the viola;

  • Guide any audience into a deep, enriching, active, and lasting relationship with music, not only through performances of the highest caliber, but also through interaction, humor, anecdotes, musical examples, and cross-cultural references;

  • Encourage cultural and personal exchanges with as diverse and broad an audience as possible, within and beyond Austin's vibrant community;

  • Reach out to the community through concerts in concert halls, schools, hospitals, museums, prisons, and other venues;

  • Advocate Music as an accessible and universal life changing energy as well as one of the richest forms of human expression and creativity;

  • Share our belief that music is a birthright, to which the human brotherhood is entitled to have access;

  • Establish a vast library of VIOLA works;

  • To celebrate established works by illustrious composers for traditional ensembles;

  • To champion Classical, Maverick, and World-inspired works with unusual instrumentation by under-represented composers, be they women, African-Americans, or any other composer whose voice and message needs to be heard and shared;

  • To implement residency programs and collaborative ventures in schools to encourage children and teenagers to find solace, and gratification in their music studies, nurture their creativity and allow their voices to be expressed through music;

  • To assist young, deserving, and talented violists through a VIOLA BY CHOICE scholarship rewarded to the winners of the VIOLA BY CHOICE competition, in the hopes that it will embolden them to pursue their practice of the viola at the College level, if not at the professional level;

  • To promote the wonderful musicians that Austin has to offer, as well as to encourage exchanges with musicians from other major cultural centers, here and abroad;

  • To tour as passionate and enthusiastic defendants of Classical Music, and as cultural ambassadors to Austin;

  • To welcome guest artists, who will share with us their talent and experience, and who will bring exposure to Austin;

  • To help Austin fulfill its potential to indeed become the "Live Classical Music Capital of the World."
